St. Catherine the Great!

On Friday we took the ferry a second time.  Once on the other side, we drove about 1 hour 15 minutes to, St. Catherine School in the Siaya District.  This small community school has been supported by CanAssist.  The desks have been built by local carpenters and funded, in part, by donations from Glenburnie Public School, in Kingston.  There are three classrooms in the school building and a small nursery school run out of a home on the property.  The 1/2, 3/4, and 5/6 class each had many, many students.  The classrooms were not large and the students sat 3 or 4 at a desk.  When we arrived the students performed a group dance which the CanAssist participants joined in on.  We had our tour, the students sang O'Canada and the Kenyan National Anthem and they played some soccer in the field.  We had some "soda" and presentations were made.  Books, balls, uniforms and other teaching materials, purchased in part from donations form the ETFO Limestone Local, were delivered and greatly appreciated by the students.  Student presentations were very impressive and the students demonstrated exemplary behaviour, tremendous talent and an infectious joy which soon brought smiles to all present.  One student in particular, Catherine, from the 5/6 class, is destined to be a future leader.  She delivered a captivating oral news report and read a story to our group.  What a talented girl!

Catherine the Great!

One of the reasons that this community needed support for a school had to do with location.  The students who attend this school live at the bottom of a very steep hill.  There was a path that led to the bottom but no road.  Therefore, one of the first jobs was to build a road to bring in the building supplies.  Young students in this area no longer need to travel unsafe distances to attend school.  Clearly the community appreciates our support and students, like Catherine, appear to be thriving!

Donations:  Uniforms from Kingston Impact and School Supplies from OTF, ETFO Limestone Local and Others.
